The application of mathematical skills and knowledge is essential to everyday life. At PVIS we aim to extend both confidence and ability by equipping children with a wide range of mathematical skills, knowledge and concepts enabling them to realise their full potential.
In Numeracy we:
develop and extend a wide range of mathematical concepts and skills through varied practical approaches, as well as discussion.
develop an understanding of mathematical language and symbols
encourage children to select the appropriate mathematics and apparatus for a given task
encourage children to use appropriate apparatus correctly
provide opportunities for children to work independently and confidently
provide opportunities for the children to apply their mathematical knowledge and understanding in everyday situations and through our cross curricular approach
In line with the new curriculum (2014) the principal focus of mathematics teaching in KS1 is to ensure pupils develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value.
There is now an expectation that all children should know their times tables by the end of Year 4. The pupils will be taking part in a National 'Times Tables Check' towards the end of that year.
For information about why fluency in times tables is important and the check itself click the image.
This check will take place when your child is in Junior School. However, Infant children need to know their 2,5 and 10 times tables to achieve the expected standard at the end of Year 2.
