In the Early Years, most of the children’s work in Science forms part of our ‘Understanding The World’ provision. The children investigate the world around them, learning about plants and animals and how they grow, explore materials and find out how they are used, and begin to develop their understanding of the need for a healthy lifestyle. This is done through a series of topics such as ‘Extreme Adventures’, ‘Where I live’ and ‘On the Move’.
At Key Stage 1, we build on these early skills and knowledge by further exploring ‘Plants’, ‘Animals’ and ‘Materials’, naming and looking at the basic needs of plants and animals and how we can make sure they stay healthy. We explore how materials can be changed and begin to look at why they are chosen for making different objects. In addition to this we learn about different kinds of weather and how they impact our lives. Popular Key Stage 1 topics include ‘A Bug’s Life’, ‘Rainforests’ and ‘Summer Holiday’.
